Corporate and Community

Key components of the Shire Budget for 2025-26 include a 2.5% rate increase with a capital works program totalling $4.45m. Shire income will come from approximately $1.3m in rates, $2.9m in grants, $710,000 from fees and charges, and $250,000 from interests and other income. The budget will compete the bowling green construction at the Recreation Centre, improve security at the landfill site and continue the townscape enhancement works. Council has also set funds aside in the budget to develop plans and costings for renewal projects such as the museum and drive-in and for the next stage of the Recreation Precinct works including a new playground.
Governance and Compliance
After advertising the shire’s new Planning Policy for Tree Farming and Plantation Projects, as required by legislation, Council approved the new policy which sets out requirements for proponents of tree farms and carbon sequestration projects that are intended to help preserve and protect the community against impacts such as increased risks of fire and vermin.
Works and Asset
Council moved to redress an ongoing problem in the shire of stock escaping from properties and creating a risk to road safety and damage to neighbouring crops and property. In the most recent case of a property owners having inadequate fencing to contain stock on Henning Road, Council has directed the CEO to give the property owner 28 days to remedy the damaged fencing or face fines and the likelihood of driver’s licence suspension for non-payment. Under the legislation the shire is also able, after the 28-day notice period has passed, to engage a fencing contractor to complete the works and charge the land owner for the costs.
To support local industry Council also resolved to request Main Roads WA to allow key roads in the shire to be allocated Restricted Access Vehicle ratings of RAV7 for the harvest period between 1 October 2025 and 31 January 2026. The roads requested are the same as applied last season, however road users are urged to check on the MRWA website for any specific conditions to apply.
