Rates Recovery Auctions
As part of a program to recover rates that have been overdue for extended periods, the shire had two properties successfully auctioned on Saturday, 4 October. At the first auction, 23 Smith Street was sold for $25,500 and was followed by the auction of the property at 1 Allenby Street which was sold at the fall of the hammer for $30,000. However, with 1 Allenby Street, the original buyer later wanted to withdraw from the contract and was required to pay the $2000 difference between the hammer price and the $28,000 offered by the next bidder who exercised their option to negotiate a purchase.
The debt collection agency acting for the shire is currently working towards bringing to auction two other properties at 27 and 51 Smith Street for outstanding rates, fees and charges while similar action is being considered for an additional two properties, one of which is farming land.
Recreation Precinct Playground Plan
Council was presented with a range of options and insights of available funding to replace the playground at the Recreation Centre. For the immediate period Council has decided to retain the exiting playground with a new playground to be considered as part of the 2025/26 mid-year budget review in February.
In the meantime, the shire will investigate costs for new fencing, landscaping and a shade sail for a slightly extended playground site to potentially accommodate new equipment in the future.
Cricket Nets Extension
With work commencing on the surface for the new bowling green, an extension will be required to the cricket nets to remove the risk of cricket balls being inadvertently hit onto the new rinks. Council has approved expenditure for works to extend the existing cricket nets which is scheduled to be undertaken in concert with the new shelters at the bowling green.
The works are expected to be completed by mid to late November with the cricket club asked to refrain from using the nets in the meantime.
