Aged and Disability
Council was successful in obtaining funding to build three new aged/joint venture accommodation units in Smith Street. It is anticipated that they will be completed by May 2008. Permanent aged care is available at Wallambin Lodge, a wing of the Wyalkatchem Koorda District Hospital which is located approximately 45km south of Koorda.
Home and Community Care Services are available for eligible persons and assessment can by made by contacting the Wyalkatchem Koorda District Hospital.
Environmental Health
The Shire of Koorda is a member of the North Eastern Whealtbelt Health Scheme who share the services of an environmental health officer. The Officer visits Koorda on Fridays or can be contacted for urgent matters.
Building Licenses
Building Construction Requirements – The following information details the general building requirements within the Shire of Koorda.
Building Code of Australia Coverage – All residential buildings to be constructed within the District, whether in town sites or in rural areas, require the submission of building plans and specifications prior to the commencement of work.
You may submit plans and obtain a Building Licence for an outbuilding or swimming pool fence even though they are located in rural areas. You may also submit plans and seek advice only prior to and commencement for outbuildings and swimming pool fences.
Natural Resource Management
A united approach to Natural Resource Management – the seven shires that comprise the North Eastern Wheatbelt Regional Organisation of Councils (NEWROC) have demonstrated a proactive and innovative approach to natural resource management and biodiversity by combining resources and pursuing collaborations with organizations that can contribute their expertise. A strategic plan for natural resource management has been developed that states as its vision for NEWROC: to be progressive and vibrant region that protects and enhances natural resources fro conservation, lifestyle and economic benefit.
In recognition of the NEWROC efforts a wide variety of organizations (at a regional, State and National level) have shown their support by offering assistance to NEWROC to achieve their vision for the region. A formal partnership has been signed between NEWROC and the World Wide Find for Nature. Co-operative projects are also being undertaken with the Avon Catchment Council, CSIRO, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Conservation and Land Management, the Department of Planning and Infrastructure, Environs Australia, Rio Tinto, Sinclair Knight Merz, Univieristy of Western Australia – Centre for Water Research and the WA Local Government Association.
This project is leading the way in Western Australia to provide an avenue for the smaller rural Local Government to tackle sustainability and environmental issues that, in the long term will determine their futures.
Club Development Scheme
Recently, the Shire Of Koorda along with the Shire's of Nungarin, Mukinbudin and Trayning received a grant from The Department of Sport and Recreation, to appoint a Club Development Officer. This funding is for a 3 year period. The Club Development Officer will be to provide ongoing support to sporting and recreation clubs throughout all four shires in a standardized, coordinated and focused approach. The Club Development Officer project aims to assist your club meet industry standards, increase membership, develop long term plans for the future, introduce basic management systems and provide you with assistance accessing funding and other support services.
