Wheatbelt Cottage Industries Inc.

Wheatbelt Cottage Industries & Craft Centre

The Wheatbelt Cottage Industries Inc. was set up in 1986 as a Community Business to help families overcome the stresses of the existing droughts mainly in the N.E. Wheatbelt. However, members joined from all over the State. We catered for hobbyists and commercial producers.

Samples were sent in from people who were prepared to fill commercial orders for their goods to produce lines of articles for the salesperson to present to the business houses in Perth and larger towns , this worked well. Since then, many producers have gone out on their own and approximately 22 have set up businesses from their farms, homes and small shops in country towns. Currently, W.C.I. still fills orders as requested for various articals.

In 1994 we changed our tack a little and have just set up a "Learning Centre" under the umbrella of the Wheatbelt Cottage Industries as we feel that the experienced skilled person can now be engaged to train others.

The Corn Dollies are also housed in the W.C.I. building. As Koorda is the "Corn Dolly Country" we find a constant supply is required. Workshops and group tuition takes place so that demand is being met. Interstate and overseas orders are filled by the Corn Dolly Makers.

A Corn Dolly

Because the Wheatbelt Cottage Industries operates on a very small commission we are unable to employ a full time sales person at present.

Woollen goods, Knitted Toys, Knitted Baby Wear, Children's Clothes, Pottery, Preserves, Dried Floral Arrangements, Dried Flowers, Wooden Jig -saws and Wood Turning are some of the products produced.

The home of the Wheatbelt Cottage Industries is in Railway Street Koorda and our future is looking exciting.

The Wheatbelt Cottage Industry welcomes everyone to become part of the group and our community enterprise.
